아틀란타 소재 Model Beauty 손영표 사장은 아틀란타 인근 Houston County가 운영하는 직업학교 (Technical County)의 후원자다. 그리고 4년째 동 학교 학생들에게 장학금을 지급하고 오고 있다. 금년에도 지난 연말을 기해 12개 학과 우수생 12명에게 1인당 500불씩 총 6,000불의 장학금을 지급했다. 또한 이들은 모두 취업을 목표로 공부하는 학생들이여서 손회장은 가끔씩 이 학생들을 대상으로 강연도 해준다. 이번에는 “청년들에게 미래의 비전을 갖고, 꿈을 이루려면 어떤 자세를 가져야 하는가?”에 대해서 얘기해주었다고 한다.
Son Young-Pyo, President of Model Beauty based in Atlanta, is a sponsor of the vocational school(Technical County) operated by Houston County near Atlanta. He has been providing scholarships to students of this school for four years now. This year, at the end of the last year, he awarded a total of $6,000 in cholarships, $500 each to 12 outstanding students from 12 departments. Since these students are all studying with the goal of employment, President Son occasionally gives lectures to them. This time he talked about “What attitude should young people have to have a vision for the future and realize their dreams?”
“사업가가 되려면 무엇을 공부 해야 하는가, 좋은 직장인은 돈만 보고 일하지 않는다, 열심히 일하면서 모든 것을 배워야 하며, 다른 직원들에게서 배울 게 많다, 어떤 경우에도 화를 내지 말고, 무엇이든 긍정적으로 생각하면서 일하라,…이런 얘기들을 해주었어요. 모든 학생들이 열심히 귀를 기울여 주더군요. 선생님들도 아주 좋아하셨고요.”
“He said things like, ‘What should you study to become a businessman? A good employee does not just work for money, you should learn everything while working hard, there is a lot to learn from other employees, never get angry in any case, and work while thinking positively about everything.’ All the students listened intently. The teachers also liked it very much.”
손 사장은 이 학교와 가진 이런 인연으로 졸업생 가운데 우수생들을 추천을 받아 직원으로도 고용해 왔다고 한다. “추천 받는 한 학생(20세)은 2년만에 저희 매장의 매지저가 되었어요. 미용관련 지식을 많이 갖춘 학생이었는데, 일을 시켜보니 정말 잘해요. 제품의 정보를 빨리 캐치하고, 고객의 질문에 답하기 어려운 경우 컴퓨터 검색을 통해 금방금방 알아내 설명 해주고, 고객이 찾는 상품도 기록해 놓았다가 반드시 구비해 놓고, 고객들과 늘 깊은 신뢰도를 쌓아 가더라고요.” 손 사장은 이렇게 얘기하면서, 기본급 9불에 시작, 지금은 2배로 급여를 올려 주었다고 덧붙였다.
President Son said that he has employed some of the graduates as employees based on this connection with the school. “One recommended student (20 years old) became our store manager in just two years. She was a student with a lot of knowledge about beauty, and she really did well when put to work. She quickly catches product information, finds and explains answers to difficult customer questions through computer searches, keeps track of products customers are looking for to always have them in stock, and builds deep trust with customers.” President Son added that he started with a base pay of $9 and has now doubled her salary.
“그 동안 장학금을 받았던 학생을 3명까지 채용을 했어요. 선생님이 검증이 된 좋은 학생들을 알아서 선택해 보내주셨는데, 선생님이 추천해준 학생들이여서 그런지 일도 잘하고 믿고 맏길 수가 있어서 오히려 제가 더 많은 혜택을 받은 거지요.(웃음)” 손 사장은 이렇게 얘기하면서 “현재 23명의 직원이 저희들 매장에서 일하고 있는데, 종업원이 부족하거나 채용 문제로 힘이 든 적이 없었다”고 말했다.
“We have employed up to three students who received scholarships. Since the teachers send good, verified students, these students work well and can be trusted, so I actually received more benefits.” (laughs) President Son said, “Currently, 23 employees are working at our store, and we have never had difficulty with staff shortages or recruitment.”
손 사장은 아틀란타 뷰티업계에서 다양한 활동을 해왔다. 조지아 아틀란타 뷰티서플라이협회(GABSA) 전 회장을 역임했고, 현재는 미주 미래 뷰티연합회 총회장으로 활동하고 있다.
President Son has been active in various activities in the Atlanta beauty industry. He served as the former president of the Georgia Atlanta Beauty Supply Association (GABSA) and is currently the President of the
Korean American Beauty Association.
