지난 달 13일에 2018년도에 새로 옮긴 Kiss사 본사를 처음으로 방문해봤다. 그간 Kiss의 성장에 대한 소식은 늘 들어 왔 지만 직접가서 보니 감탄을 안 할수가 없었다.
뉴욕 Port Washington에 자리 잡고 있는 본사는 파킹장에서 부터 나를 놀라게 했다. 빌딩을 들어가는 순간 굉장히 모던한 빌딩과 큰 사이즈에 입이 딱 벌어졌지만, 열심히 일하고 있는 직원들의 프로페셔널 한 모습은 더욱 인상적이었다.
바쁜 일정에도 시간을 내어서 대화를 나누어준 한규상 부문 장, Karen Hoggatt 마케팅 부장 그리고 김용훈 R&D 팀장이 우리 맞아 주었다. 그들은 Kiss를 더욱 성장시키는 일 보다는 앞으로 가야 할 우리 업계 이슈와 Kiss 뿐만 아니라 뷰티 서플라이 업계가 성장 할 수 있게 지금까지 함께 해 온 흑인 커뮤니티와 계속 좋은 관계를 어떻게 유지 할까에 더욱 중점을두고 있었다. 수많은 리서치와 노력으로 Kiss가 지금같은 큰 기업으로 성장했지만, 멀리 보았을때 같이 해온 흑인커뮤니티와 서로 모르는 점들을 교환 하고 좀 더 시간을 들여 조금 더 가까워지는 일이 지금 시점에서 중요하다는 것이 그들의 의견이었다. 한시간 정도 대화후, 전체 빌딩을 투어 할 수있는기회를 만들어 주었다. 코로나 이후로 많은 직원들이 재택근무 중이라 자리가 드문 드문 비어 있긴 했지만, 정신없이 일하는 젊은 에너지, 디테일하고 자신감 있으면서도 겸손함을 느낄수 있는 팀장들, 그리고 최고의 시설로 갖추어진 농구코트와 아침,점심, 저녁을 공급하는 카페테리아는 나의 상상을 초월했다.
짧은 시간이었지만 많은것을 느꼈고 나오면서 걸려진 태극기와 성조기를 보았을 때, 비롯 초라하게 시작했지만, 불과 33 년만에 이런 성과를 올릴 수 있었다니, 노력 만하면 누구든 큰 성장을 얻을 수 있는 미국, 우리가 여기에 사는것에 감사하면서 한국인으로서 자랑스러웠다.
On June 13th, I visited the Kiss headquarters, established in year 2018, for the first time.I’ve always heard of Kiss’s growth, but seeing it in person, I couldn’t help but marvel.
Headquarter, located in Port Washington, New York, surprised me from the parking lot, and the moment I entered the building, I was struck by the very modern building and the sheer size, but the pro- fessional appearance of the working staff was also very impressive. Gary Han(Head of Division), Karen Hoggatt(Head of Marketing), and Yong-Hoon Kim(R&D Team Leader), who took time out of their busy schedules to meet, rather than discussing their company issues, they focused talking about more on how to better whole beauty indus- try and how to maintain good relationships with the community that supported them through out all these years. Although Kiss has grown into a large company like it is now through a lot of research and ef- forts, they thought it was more important at this juncture to get clos- er with the African-American community by exchanging ideas and spending more time together.
After about an hour of discussion, they gave us the opportunity to tour the whole building. Since many employees have been working remotely since Covid-19, many seats were vacant, but young energy working frantically, team leaders who seemed confident, yet hum- ble, and the state-of-the-art basketball court along with the cafeteria which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner was beyond my imagina- tion.After the tour ended, I realized I learned a lot in such a short time, and when I saw a Korean flag and an American flag hanging as I was walking out, I was grateful to live in a country where a company can achieve such a growth in just 33 years from humble-beginning, and very proud as a Korean.
