웜톤(warm tone) 줄까, 쿨톤(cool tone) 줄까?
다크 스킨 고객들에게 K-쿠션을 잘 팔기 위해 먼저 알아야 할 것이 있으니 바로 언더톤(undertone)의 이해다.
임비올 톡톡 쿠션의 인스타그램(@toktok_cushion)에는 한국, 미국, 프랑스, 나이지리아 등 전세계에 거주하는 인플루언서들의 쿠션 사용 소감이 올라가 있다. 이들이 제품 추천 코멘트를 할 때 빠뜨리지 않는 것이 있으니, 바로 자신의 피부 ‘언더톤’이 웜톤인지 쿨톤인지를 밝힌다는 것이다.
흑인 언더톤에 대한 오해
28년차 메이크업 아티스트이자 퍼스널 컬러 전문가인 나 조차도 백인의 피부톤은 쿨톤, 흑인 피부톤은 웜톤이라는 선입견이 있었음을 고백한다. 하지만 흑인의 언더톤도 웜톤과 쿨톤으로 나뉘며, 그 비율은 반반 정도다. 그리고 고객들은 이미 자신의 언더톤이 어느 쪽인지를 알고 있다.
임비올 전속 모델인 Lauren과 사전 미팅을 할 때 쿠션을 써본 그녀는 매우 정확하게 ‘내 피부는 웜톤이라서 12호 MOCHA 컬러가 맞다’고 얘기했다. Lauren뿐 아니라 톡톡 쿠션을 써본 다크스킨 인플루언서들은 모두 자신의 피부가 웜톤인지 쿨톤인지를 정확하게 알고 있었다.
미션! 언더톤(undertone)을 이해하라
언더톤은 말 그대로 피부(skin) 바로 아래층의 톤이다. 태닝을 해도 언더톤은 바뀌지 않으니, 개인의 고유한 컬러라고 할 수 있다.
쿠션이나 파운데이션 같은 베이스 메이크업 제품을 고를 때는 언더톤의 이해가 필수적이다. 색깔을 맞춘다고 해도, 쿨톤 피부에 웜톤 컬러를 입히면 화장이 과해보이거나 뜬 것처럼 보이기 때문이다. 립스틱이나 아이섀도의 경우도 마찬가지이니 K-메이크업을 고객에게 판매하고 싶다면 먼저 이렇게 질문하자. “What’s your undertone?”
언더톤을 모른다면 베이스 제품을 팔 수 없다
영화 <Mickey 17>의 홍보를 위해 한국을 찾은 로버트 패틴슨(Robert Pattinson)이 퍼스널 컬러를 찾는 모습이 공개되어 화제였다. 실제 관광객들에게 인기 있는 관광 코스이기도 한 퍼스널 컬러 판단의 주요 방법은 여러가지 컬러의 천을 얼굴 아래에 갖다 대어보는 것이다. 만약 쿨톤의 천을 대었을 때보다 웜톤의 천을 갖다 대었을 때 인상이 더 예쁘고 생기있어 보인다면 해당 언더톤이라고 판단한다.
매장에서 하기 쉬운 간단한 언더톤 측정법
우선 팔을 걷어 부쳐야 한다. 그리고 손목 안쪽 피부를 통해 비쳐 보이는 혈관(vein)의 색깔을 살피도록. 언더톤은 피부 바로 아래에 있는 피부층의 색깔이므로 혈관 컬러로 판단할 수 있다. 흑인 피부의 경우, 만약 혈관이 초록(green)에 가까운 색이라면 ‘웜’ 언더톤이다. 반면에 파랑(blue)이나 보라(purple)에 가깝다면 ‘쿨’ 언더톤이다.
또 다른 트릭은 ‘주얼리 테스트’다. 골드와 실버 컬러의 목걸이나 귀걸이를 각각 준비한 다음 얼굴에 갖다댔을 때, 어느 쪽이 좀 더 잘 어울리는지 보면 된다. 골드가 잘 어울린다면 웜톤, 실버라면 쿨톤이다.
피부에 매칭하는 쿠션 권하는 법
임비올 톡톡 쿠션 파운데이션의 9호 카라멜(caramel)과 10호(cappuccino)는 그 어두운 정도가 언뜻보면 비슷해 보인다. 하지만 9호는 붉은기가 도는 쿨톤, 10호는 노란기가 도는 웜톤이다. 11호 시나몬(cinnamon)과 12호 모카(mocha)도 비슷해보이지만 11호는 쿨톤, 12호는 웜톤이다.
만약 고객이 어떤 컬러가 맞는 건지 모르겠다고 하면, 웜톤과 쿨톤 중 아래턱이나 가슴 위쪽에 발랐을 때 ‘녹아들듯이 사라지는’ 컬러가 맞는 컬러라고 조언해주면 된다. 뺨이나 이마가 아니라 턱 아래에 바르라는 이유는, 쿠션은 블렌드가 잘 되고 여러번 겹쳐바를 수록 컬러가 짙어지기 때문이다. 눈으로 봤을 때 밝다고 느끼는 컬러도 여러 번 두드려 바르면 피부에 맞는 컬러인 걸 알 수 있다.

Misconceptions About Black Skin Undertones
Even as a makeup artist with 28 years of experience and a personal color specialist, I must confess I held the misconception that Caucasian skin tends to be cool-toned while Black skin is usually warm-toned. In reality, Black skin undertones are split fairly evenly between warm and cool. Most importantly, clients typically already know which undertone category they fall into. During a pre-shoot meeting with Lauren, Imbeall’s exclusive model, she confidently stated, “My skin has a warm undertone, so shade 12 MOCHA is perfect for me.” Not just Lauren, but all the dark-skinned influencers who’ve tried the TokTok cushion knew precisely whether their skin had warm or cool undertones.
Mission: Understand Undertones
An undertone is literally the color tone just beneath the skin’s surface. Unlike your surface skin color, undertones remain unchanged even with tanning, making them your skin’s innate signature. Understanding undertones is crucial when selecting base makeup products like cushions or foundations. Even if the shade appears to match, applying warm-toned products on cool-toned skin can make makeup look unnatural or floating on the skin. The same principle applies to lipsticks and eyeshadows. When selling K-makeup to clients, start by asking this key question: “What’s your undertone?” WARM: If your natural skin color has yellow or gold undertones. COOL: If your skin has pink, red, or bluish undertones.
You Can’t Sell Base Products Without Understanding Undertones
Robert Pattinson caused a stir when he was seen having his personal color analyzed during his visit to Korea for the “Mickey 17” promotion. This popular tourist activity involves placing different colored fabrics beneath the face. If warm-toned fabrics make your complexion appear more vibrant and flattering than cool-toned ones, that indicates your underlying tone.
Simple Undertone Testing Methods For In-Store Use
First, have the client roll up their sleeve. Examine the color of veins (visible through the skin) at the inside of the wrist. Since undertones reflect the color of the skin layer just below the surface, vein color provides valuable insight. For darker skin tones, veins appearing greenish indicate a ‘warm’ undertone, while blue or purple veins suggest a ‘cool’ undertone.
Another trick is the ‘jewelry test.’ Prepare both gold and silver necklaces or earrings and hold them against the face to see which complements the skin better. If gold looks more flattering, they likely have warm undertones; if silver, cool undertones.
How To Recommend The Right Cushion Shade

Even shades that initially appear too light can match perfectly once patted into the skin properly.
