어린 학생들이 손 바쁘게 브레이드 머리 땋는 연습을 하고 있다. 7세에서 17세까지의 청소년을 대상으로 미용 직업 기술을 가르치며 2대째 이어가고 있는 Junior Cosmetology 클래스 장면이다. Junior Cosmetology는 루이지애나주 베턴 루즈에 위치하고 있는 비영리단체이며, 창립자이자 대표 데이나 헤이즈 (Dana Hayes) 는 장인 정신과 전문성을 가지고, 지역 커뮤니티와 젊은 세대에게 직업 기술을 전수하는데 헌신하고 있다. 동 단체는 루이지애나 로컬 NBC, WBRZ 공영방송들이 이미 소개한바 있을 정도로 커뮤니티 내에서 큰 반향을 일으키고 있다. 지난 4월에도 루이지애나 St. Gabriel Community Center 에서 주니어 미용 클래스가 공개적으로 열렸다. 당시 현장 모습을 비롯한 단체 관련 얘기를 헤이즈 대표와 나누어 보았다.
Youthful hands deftly weave braids, as they diligently practice their craft. This is the scene at Junior Cosmetology, where adolescents aged 7 to 17 learn the art and skill of cosmetology, spanning two generations. Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Junior Cosmetology, spearheaded by Dana Hayes, is committed to instilling craftsmanship and professionalism while passing on vocational skills to the local community’s youth. Already gaining traction with features on local NBC and WBRZ public broadcasts, it stands as a beacon of vocational education.
Last April, a Junior Cosmetology event took place at the St. Gabriel Community Center in Louisiana, attracting attention to the organization’s endeavors. During this event, insights and stories were shared with Dana Hayes, the representative of Junior Cosmetology.

Interviewer: Hello, today we’re joined by Dana Hayes, the founder of Junior Cosmetology, a non-profit organization based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dana, could you share what inspired the establishment of Junior Cosmetology?
헤이즈: 제 어머니(Mrs. Ora Lee Breaux Williams)가 40년 이상 미용사로 활동하셨습니다. 그분의 영향으로 저도어릴적부터 미용분야에 관심을 가지게 되었고, 그후 30년 이상 경력을 쌓으며 미용사로서의 꿈을 이루었습니다. 어머니를 기리고자 주니어 미용 클래스을 시작하게 된 것입니다.
Dana Hayes: Absolutely. The inspiration behind Junior Cosmetology stems from my mother, Mrs. Ora Lee Breaux Williams, who dedicated over 40 years to hairstyling. Her influence sparked my interest in the beauty industry, and after accumulating over 30 years of experience, I founded Junior Cosmetology in her honor.

Interviewer: Could you provide more insights into the Junior Cosmetology event held in April?
헤이즈 : 행사 포스터에 있는 로고에 보이세요? 웃고 있는 아이들이 바로 제 딸 하나(16), 라일라 (12) 이예요. 저는 제가 아는 모든 기술을 딸들에게 전수하고 있습니다. 이제 딸들도 행사에 자원봉사로 참여해서 도움을 주고 있어요. 클래스에는 제 딸들과 비슷한 또래 아이들이 다수 참여하고 있어 큰 도움이 되고 있어요. 이번 행사에는 약 100명정도가 참가해 또 하나의 뜻깊은 행사를 가졌습니다.
Dana Hayes: Certainly. If you take a look at the event poster, you’ll see the smiling faces of my daughters, Hanna (16) and Laila (12), who actively participate in the program. They assist me and provide invaluable support. The event drew approximately 100 participants, making it a significant gathering.

Interviewer: How does your mother’s legacy influence the mission of Junior Cosmetology?
헤이즈: 제 어머니의 가르침과 영향은 주니어 미용 클래스의 핵심 가치 중 하나입니다. 저희는 미용 분야의 전문 기술뿐만 아니라 자신감, 자존감, 책임감 등 인격적 가치를 함께 전달하고자 합니다. 제 어머니의 따뜻한 마음가짐과 노력이 저희에게 큰 영감을 주었으며, 이를 토대로 주니어 미용 클래스을 통해 젊은이들의 꿈을 응원하고 지원하고자 합니다.
Dana Hayes: My mother’s values, including warmth and dedication, are at the core of Junior Cosmetology. Beyond teaching professional cosmetology skills, we aim to instill personal values such as confidence and responsibility. Her legacy inspires us to support and nurture the dreams of young people.

Interviewer: How have your experiences as a hairstylist shaped your journey?
헤이즈: 제가 미용사가 되기로 결심한 것은 제 어머니와 언니의 영향이 컸습니다. 어릴 적부터 미용실에서 보낸 시간은 저에게 많은 자긍심과 열정을 심어 주었습니다. 어머니의 가르침은 제게 미용 분야뿐만 아니라 삶의 균형과 책임감에 대한 중요성을 가르쳐 주었습니다. 이러한 가르침은 지금까지 제 인생과 사업에 큰 영향을 미치고 있습니다.
Dana Hayes: My decision to pursue hairstyling was heavily influenced by my mother and sister, both experienced hairstylists. Growing up in a salon environment instilled in me a sense of pride and passion. My mother’s teachings about balance and responsibility continue to guide me in both my personal and professional endeavors.

헤이즈: 주니어 미용 클래스는 미용 분야의 전문 기술뿐만 아니라 자기 발견과 성장을 위한 공간을 제공합니다. 저희는 학생들이 자신의 잠재력을 최대한 발휘할 수 있도록 다양한 활동과 프로젝트를 통해 자기 개발을 돕고 있습니다. 미용 분야뿐만 아니라 인격적 성장과 사회적 책임감도 함께 갖추는 것이 저희의 목표이죠.
Dana Hayes: Junior Cosmetology provides a platform for students to develop both professional skills and personal growth. Through a variety of activities, we encourage self-discovery and aim to equip students with technical expertise alongside personal development.

Interviewer: What are the future aspirations of Junior Cosmetology?
헤이즈: 우리의 목표는 젊은이들이 자신의 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 돕고, 사회적으로 책임 있는 시민으로 성장할 수 있도록 지원하는 것입니다. 미래를 준비하는 젊은이들에게 필요한 지식과 기술을 전달하여, 그들이 미래에 성공적인 인재로 거듭날 수 있도록 돕는 것이 우리의 사명입니다.
Dana Hayes: Our goal is to empower young people to pursue their dreams and become responsible citizens. By imparting essential skills and knowledge, we aim to prepare them for a successful future.

Interviewer: Finally, do you have any advice for aspiring braiders?
헤이즈: 브레이더에게 전하고 싶은 조언은 최대한 전문성을 겸비하려 노력하라는 것입니다. 자격증을 받을 수 있는 과정이 있다면 수강하고, 하는 모든 일들에 자부심을 가지길 바랍니다. 너무 세게 당기거나 꽉 묶인 브레이드를 하고 있다면, 고객의 두피에 치명적인 손상을 줄 수 있으니 꼭 건강한 브레이드 기술을 전문적으로 계속 배우세요. 그리고 브레이드를 할 때 두피에 안전하고 최고인 브레이드 헤어를 사용하세요. 저희들에게 도움을 주시는 귀사의 EZBRAID 제품을 저는 계속 추천하고 있습니다.
Dana Hayes: The advice I’d like to convey to braiders is to strive for professionalism at all times. If there are courses available for certification, I recommend taking them, and I hope you take pride in everything you do. If you’re braiding too tightly or pulling too hard, it can cause severe damage to the scalp, so please continue to learn healthy braiding techniques professionally.
