전문직&뷰티매장 경영 투잡뛰는 1.5세대
“지난 10월 한상대회 때 미주여성경영인협회(BBKWA: Beauty Business Korean Women’s Association) 회원으로 한인 여성들과 처음 그룹 나들이를 했어요. 너무도 좋았습니다. 인생의 새로운 지평을 연 것 같았지요. 예전에는 한인사회와 좀 거리를 두고 살았거든요. 그래서 한인 협회에 대해 편견이 좀 있었는데, 막상 BBKWA 회원들을 만나 며칠 어울려 보니, 모두 대단한 분들이셨어요. 경험도 많으시고, 평생 흑인 고객들을 상대로 장사를 하시면서 궂은날 좋은날 가리지 않고 묵묵히 훌륭한 삶들을 살으셨더라고요. 때로는 동료 상인들과 만나 회식도 하시면서 스트레스도 풀고, 비즈니스 정보도 교환하고… 삶이란 바로 이런 거구나 새롭게 깨달았죠.”
미세스 홍(이수영 52, 홍경성 사장 부인)은 뷰티 서플라이 입문 3년차다. 그는 Medical Laboratory Scientist(임상병리사) 의료인으로 멤피스 Germantown Hospital 실험실 수퍼바이저다. 남편 홍경성(59) 사장이 3년 전 뷰티 서플라이 소매업을 시작하면서 뷰티 매장 경영도 함께 하고 있다.
“3년 전부터 투잡을 뛰게 되었어요. 일주일에 3번 정도 일하고 있는데, 삶이 좀 더 재미있어졌습니다. 가발과 패션 액세서리 쪽 일을 하고 있는데, 매장을 찾는 손님들과 다양한 대화를 나눌 수 있는 것만으로도 너무 좋더군요. 병원에서는 갖지 못한 새로운 분위기를 즐기는 거죠.”
미세스 홍은 한국에서 초등학교를 마치고, 중학교 1학년 때 부모님을 따라 미국에 이민 왔다. 부친(이명용 사장)은 그로서리 비즈니스로 가족을 부양했는데, 58세에 갑자기 세상을 떠났다. 미세스 홍이 약학대를 다니던 중이었다. 24살 나이에 미세스 홍은 졸지에 가장이 되었다.
“당시 대학생이었던 두 동생들 그리고 모친을 돌봐야 했어요. 학업을 중단해야 했죠. 가족 생활비, 동생들 교육비 등 가정사를 해결하고, 34살에 대학을 다시 다녔어요.” 미세스 홍은 이런 얘기를 하며 “10년 전 어머니 재혼까지 시켜드렸다”고 웃으며 덧붙인다. 효녀다. 인터뷰했던 날, 미세스 홍은 달라스 막내 동생(파이낸셜 어드바이저)을 방문하기 위해 준비하고 있었다. “동생이 몸이 안 좋아 플로리다 사는 동생(약사)과 함께 달라스에서 만나기로 했다”는 것이었다. 한 집안의 가장으로 책임을 다해 살았고, 또한 그 책임을 끝까지 다하고 있는 훌륭한 분이다.
“우리 업계는 이제 미세스 홍 같은 분이 필요하다”고 기자가 얘기를 꺼내면서 “언어를 매개로 끈끈한 인연을 맺은 한인들끼리 오늘의 뷰티 서플라이 사업을 일구게 되었다. 이 사업을 차세대가 더욱 발전시켜 나가야 하는데, 한국어와 영어 모두를 잘하는 미세스 홍 같은 분의 역할이 이제 아주 중요해졌다”고 덧붙이자, 미세스 홍은 “도울 수 있는 일이 있다면 최선을 다하고 싶다”고 답하며, “사실 BBKWA 회원에 가입하기 전에 남편과 상의를 했어요. 제가 과연 그분들과 어울릴 수 있을까 걱정도 했어요. 남편은 기꺼이 동의했습니다. 회원이 되고 보니 진작 가입을 했더라면 더 좋았을 거라는 생각이 들더군요. 회원님들 대부분이 참 대단하시더라고요. 저보다 건강 좋으시고, 가정 살림, 아이들 교육은 물론 비즈니스도 아주 훌륭하게 하셨다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다.” 이런 얘기 끝에 미세스 홍은 “그분들의 얘기를 들으면서 좀 더 일찍 이 사업에 뛰어들었더라면 더 좋았을 거라는 생각이 들었어요. 새로운 모티베이션의 기회가 된 거죠.”라고 했다.
초등시절 “기자”가 되는 것이 꿈이었다고 한다. “소년동아 기자에 뽑히기도 했어요. 당시에는 미국 이민이 싫었죠. 미국에서 전문분야에 종사하다 보니 한국말도 서툴고, 독서의 기회도 많지 않아 글쓰기도 어려워지더군요.” 미세스 홍은 “이제 한인사회와 좀 더 가까이 하면서 어떤 일이든 도움이 된다면 도우면서 어울려 살고 싶다”고 덧붙였다.
남편 홍경성 사장은 한국에서 군 제대 후 23세에 이민 왔다. 의류업에 종사했었다. 뷰티업계에 입문, 매니저 생활을 오래 하다가 3년 전 뷰티 서플라이 스토어를 인수했다. 홍사장 부부는 슬하에 남매를 두었다. 아들(27)은 멤피스 소방관으로 일하면서 프로골퍼의 꿈을 꾸고 있고, 딸(23)은 시카고에서 *Medical Occupational Therapy* 대학원 과정을 밟고 있다.
Professional & Beauty Store Owner, 1.5 Generation, Juggling Two Jobs
Last October, I had my first group outing with the Beauty Business Women’s Association (BBKWA) at the World Korean Business Convention in Korea, and it was an experience I absolutely loved. It felt like the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I’ve always been somewhat distant from the Korean American community and had some preconceived notions about Korean American associations. But after spending time with the BBKWA members for a few days, I was truly impressed. They are incredibly knowledgeable, having worked with African-American customers throughout their careers, and they’ve lived through both good times and bad. They even get together with fellow merchants for drinks, sharing business insights and relieving stress. It really made me realize that this is what life is all about.
Mrs. Sue Hong (52), wife of Kyong S. Hong (59), is in her third year in the beauty supply business. She is also a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a lab supervisor at Germantown Hospital in Memphis. Her husband, Kyong Song Hong, started their beauty supply retail business three years ago and also manages a beauty store.
“I began working two jobs three years ago. I work about three days a week at the store, and it’s made my life more interesting. I work with wigs and fashion accessories, and I love the variety of conversations I have with customers. It’s something I didn’t experience in the hospital,” she shares.
Mrs. Hong completed elementary school in South Korea and immigrated to the U.S. with her parents when she was in first grade of middle school. Her father, Lee Myung Yong, supported the family through a grocery business until he unexpectedly passed away at 58. At the time, Ms. Hong was in pharmacy school, but had to dropped out to support her family. At just 24, she became the head of her household.
“I had to take care of my mother and two younger siblings, who were in college. I had to pause my studies to support the family, pay for their education, and later return to college at 34,” she says. “I even arranged for my mother to remarry 10 years ago,” she adds with a smile.
Mrs. Hong is a deeply devoted daughter. On the day of the interview, she was preparing to visit her youngest sister, a financial advisor in Dallas. “My sister isn’t feeling well, so I’m going to meet her and my sister from Florida, who’s a pharmacist,” she explains. Mrs. Hong has always taken her responsibilities as the head of the family seriously and continues to do so.
“Our Beauty Supply Industry needs someone like Ms. Hong,” the reporter said, adding that “Korean-Americans have built the beauty supply business today largely through the bond of language. The next generation needs continue to develop this business, and the role of someone like Ms. Hong, who is good at both Korean and English, has important role to play.” Ms. Hong replied, “If there is anything I can do to help, I want to do my best,” and Mrs Hong said “I actually consulted with my husband before joining BBKWA because I wasn’t sure if I’d fit in, but he supported me. After becoming a member, I realized I should have joined earlier. Most of the members are incredible—better health than I have, managing families, educating their children, and running their businesses so well. Listening to their stories, I wish I’d started this business earlier, and it gave me new motivation.”
When Ms. Hong was in elementary school, she dreamed of becoming a “reporter” and was even selected as a “Donga Boy’s Reporter.” At the time, she didn’t want to immigrate to the U.S., but as she pursued her studies in the States, she found writing difficult due to her limited fluency in Korean and lack of reading opportunities. “Now, I want to be closer to the Korean-American community and help in any way I can,” she added.
Her husband, Kyungsung Hong, immigrated from South Korea at 23 as part of a military unit and initially worked in the garment industry. He later transitioned into the beauty industry, managing a beauty supply store before taking over ownership three years ago. The couple has two children: a 27-year-old son who is a firefighter in Memphis and an aspiring professional golfer, and a 23-year-old daughter who is pursuing graduate studies in Medical Occupational Therapy in Chicago.
