NFBS 총연 재가입 40-50대 회원들과 매월 만나

“그 동안 고생 좀 했지요. 겨우 안정을 찾았습니다.” 늘 만면에 웃음을 잃지않고 유머가 풍부한 사람으로 알려진 김 대동(50) 회장이 인터뷰를 시작하면서 남다른 사연을 털어 놓았다.
“2006년 어학연수차 미국에 왔어요. 그런데 체류기간을 연기하는 과정에서 여권를 포함한 서류가 없어져버린 사건이 발생, 오도가도 못한 상황에 쳐해버렸습니다. 알라바마에 거주하신 고모님을 찾아갔죠. 고생이 시작되었습니다. 조지아 한 중국식당에서 접시닦기 일로 본격적인 미국생활을 시작했는데, 정말 엄청나게 힘들더군요. 한 달도 못버티고, 주택 싸이딩 업체로 옮겨 막일을 했죠. 3-4개월 일하던 도중 그 업체에 큰 사건이 하나 발생, 그곳을 떠나야했어요. 무작정 뉴저지를 향했죠. 여기서 구세주를 만났습니다. 간호사였던 아내를 만나 결혼을 하게 된거죠. 체류문제도 해결되었고, 헤어존에 취직도 했고, 행복이 시작되는 듯 했어요.“
그런데 아내가 임신 중 혈액암 진단을 받았다는 것이다. ”항암치료와 함께 골수이식을 받아야 생명을 건질 수 있는 긴급 상황이 발생했어요. 하지만 전세계 어디를 찾아도 아내와 맞는 골수를 가진 사람이 하나도 없는 겁니다. 의사들도 포기했고, 아내는 수혈을 통해서 6개월을 겨우 겨우 버티면서 임신 7개월만에 아이를 조산을 했어요. 그리고 죽음을 기다리던 도중, 한 달만에 기적이 일어났습니다. 98% 매치가 되는 골수를 아내가 다니던 병원 의사들이 찾아낸 것입니다. 그리고 4년전 완치 판결을 받았어요“ 김 회장은 이런 얘기 끝에 ”뒤돌아보면 이제 11살이 된 딸이 엄마를 살렸다“고 덧붙였다. ”뱃속에 든 아기를 끝까지 낳겠다“는 엄마의 의지가 아기를 살렸다는 것이다.
김 회장은 8년전 시작한 뷰티서플라이 소매점을 하나 운영하며 집과 가게를 오가며 ”작지만 행복한 삶을 살고 있다“며 “아내는 4년 전 완치 판결을 받았고, 이제는 간호사 일을 그만 두고 집에서 아이를 돌보고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
뉴저지협회는 현재 24명의 회원으로 구성되어 있다. 회원 대부분 40-50대다. 매월 1회 모임을 갖고 정보교환, 그리고 공동구매 건에 대해서 협의한다. 지난 해 3-4차례 공동구매를 실시했고, 금년에도 계속 공동구매를 추진할 예정이다. 금년초 총연합회(NFBS)에 재가입했다.
경기도 파주가 고향인 김 회장은 기독교 신앙인이다. 아내의 죽음을 앞두고 마지막으로 매달렸던 어느 목사님을 만나면서 기독교 입문의 계기가 되었다고 한다 . “항상 기도하고, 기뻐하는 삶을 사는 것이” 그의 생활 신조다. 집안의 외아들이다. 바쁜 미국생활에도 고향에 계신 부모님을 2년마다 한번씩 찾아 뵈었다. 3년전 모친은 별세하시고 이제는 부친(82)만 살아계신다. <이계송 기자>
“I’ve been struggling for a while, but I’ve finally found stability.” Kim, Dae-Dong (50), who is known as a man who always has a smile on his face and is full of humor, began the interview with an unusual story.
“In 2006, I came to the U.S. to study English laguage, but while extending my stay, my documents, including my passport, went missing, and I was caught off guard. I went to visit my aunt in Alabama, and that’s when the trouble began. “I started my first job in the U.S. as a dishwasher at a Chinese restaurant in Georgia, and it was really, really hard. I didn’t last a month, so I moved to a house siding company, and after three or four months, something happened to the company, and I had to leave. I headed to New Jersey, where I met my savior, my wife, who was a nurse, and we got married. My immigration problem was solved, I got a job at Hairzone, and it seemed like happiness was in the air.”
But then his wife was diagnosed with blood cancer while pregnant. “She needed a bone marrow transplant with chemotherapy to save her life, but there wasn’t a single bone marrow match for her anywhere in the world. Doctors gave up, and she barely survived six months on blood transfusions and gave birth prematurely at seven months pregnant. Within a month of her death, a miracle happened: doctors at her hospital found a 98% match, and she was declared cured four years ago.” “Looking back, her daughter, now 11, saved her life,” Kim said. The mother’s determination to “carry the baby in her belly to the end” saved her life.
Kim owns a retail beauty supply store that he started eight years ago, and lives a “small but happy life” between home and the store, adding, “My wife was declared cured four years ago, and now she quit her job as a nurse and stays home to take care of the child.”
The New Jersey chapter of NFBS currently has 24 members. Most members are in their 40s and 50s. They meet once a month to exchange information and discuss joint purchases. The group has made three or four joint purchases in the past year and plans to continue to do so this year. Earlier this year, the organization rejoined the NFBS.
Kim, a native of Paju, Gyeonggi-do, is a Christian. He was introduced to Christianity when he met a pastor during his wife’s last moments before her death. “Always praying and living a life of joy” is his credo. He is the only son in his family. Despite his busy life in the United States, he visited his parents back home every two years. His mother passed away three years ago, and now only his father (82) is alive.
