보호 헤어스타일(Protective Hair Style)이란 아프로 텍스처드 헤어(Afro-textured hair) 또는 킹키 헤어(Kinky hair)의 약점을 완화하는 데 도움이 되는 스타일을 말한다. 기후로 인한 온도, 햇볕, 습도 등 여러 환경 때문에 발생하는 모발의 문제를 최소화하기 위해서 고안해 낸 스타일들을 통틀어 ‘보호 헤어스타일’이라고 한다.
보통 흑인 고객들이 선호하는 브레이드(braids), 가발(wigs), 록스(locks), 트위스트(twists) 등이 여기에 포함된다. 이런 스타일들은 기후 관련 손상을 막아줄 뿐만 아니라, 헤어의 길이를 유지해 주고, 헤어의 성장 촉진에도 도움을 준다. 헤어의 엉킴과 매듭(knots) 같은 문제도 막아준다. 이러한 스타일은 반복되는 스타일링, 당김, 빗질 같은 일상적인 머리 손질로 인해서 생기는 문제점을 완화시켜줄 수 있으므로 전반적인 모발 건강에 기여한다.

미국의 일부 지역에서는 보호 헤어스타일을 포함하여 흑인의 헤어스타일을 근거로 차별하는 행위를 금지하고 있다. 2007년, 한 라디오 진행자가 대학 농구팀을 “nappy headed(곱슬머리)”라고 해서 분노를 불러일으킨 바 있다. 이로 인해 예정된 쇼가 취소되었다. 2020년에는 노아 사이러스가 “nappy hair”라는 발언으로 많은 논란을 일으켰다. 이후 그녀는 소셜 미디어를 통해 자신이 사용한 용어의 배경과 역사를 몰랐다며 사과했다. 헤어스타일과 헤어 텍스처에 따른 인종 차별을 금지하기 위해 2022년 크라운 법(Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair Act of 2022)이라고 부르는 연방 법안이 통과되었다. 현재 흑인 여성들은 블로그와 유튜브 채널을 만들어 자신들의 헤어스타일을 긍정적인 방식으로 옹호하고 있다.
Box braids
머리카락 밑 부분을 사각형으로 나누고 뿌리부터 끝까지 헤어를 땋는 고전적인 보호 스타일. Updo 와 포니테일 등 다양한 방법이 가능하다. A classic protective style that involves sectioning hair into squares and braiding from root to tip. Box braids can be worn in many ways, including updos and ponytails.

Faux locs는 모조 락이라는 말인데, 보통 크로셰 뜨개질 방법으로 자연 모발에 부착시켜 임시 락 헤어 익스텐션이다. Faux locs는 burrtefly locs부터 goddess locs, 심지어 soft locs까지 포함, crochet faux locs를 포괄하는 포괄적인 용어다.
